Stylesheet is missing.

“Stylesheet is missing.” in WordPress: causes and what to check

Updated 2026-11-01

WordPress lists a theme as broken with this message when the theme folder has no style.css at its top level. Every theme needs style.css with a header that names the theme; without it, WordPress cannot load or activate the theme.

Which of these do you see?

The zip contained an extra folder level, so style.css sits one folder deeper than WordPress looks.

style.css was deleted or emptied, often during an interrupted update or a file cleanup.

The copy skipped files, and style.css was among them.

Common causes

Extra folder level in the zip: The theme files sit inside a second folder.
style.css deleted or emptied: An interrupted update or a cleanup removed the file or its contents.
Damaged header: The comment block at the top of style.css lost its Theme Name line.
Incomplete copy: A migration or restore did not copy every theme file.

Rather not fix it yourself? Let WP119 handle it automatically.

A broken theme is handled automatically: the system first fixes the damaged fragment, then reinstalls the theme from the official theme directory, and only as a last step switches to a safe fallback theme (the appearance may differ). Fixes are made on a copy of your site in the recovery station and written back only after re-verification passes. In your site’s database, the protected tables (members, comments, orders and form submissions) are copied as structure only. In SSH and FTP mode, the system creates a pre-recovery backup on your host before writing back and restores from it if verification after write-back fails. If the recovery cannot be completed, the recovery fee is refunded in full.

  1. Initial assessment: Site URL entry
  2. Copy to the recovery station: Work on a copy
  3. Diagnosis: Item-by-item checks
  4. Recovery and verification: Home and inner pages
  5. Write-back or delivery: Only after verification passes

Use WP119 when the active theme shows this message and the site has lost its layout or no longer loads.
