ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS on a WordPress site: causes and what to check

Updated 2026-10-30

The browser stops loading a page when the server sends it from one URL to another in a loop. On WordPress sites the loop usually comes from the site URL settings, HTTPS settings, or redirect rules.

Which of these matches what you see?

The WordPress Address and Site Address in the database can still point to the old URL or protocol. Images and links can also still point to the old address.

When the CDN connects to the server over HTTP while WordPress requires HTTPS, each request is redirected again. Check the SSL mode in the CDN settings.

The loop is often in the login cookie or FORCE_SSL_ADMIN setting, or in a security plugin redirect. Note whether it happens in every browser.

Common causes

Site URL settingshome and siteurl do not match the address the site is served from.
HTTPS settingsWordPress, the server, and the CDN disagree on whether the site uses HTTPS.
Redirect rules.htaccess, a redirect plugin, or a host rule sends the request back to the same URL.
Cached redirectsA browser or cache plugin keeps an old redirect.

What the system does

Wrong URL settings are handled automatically: the system corrects the site URL settings and runs a site-wide search-and-replace, including serialized data.

Use WP119 when the site URL settings need correction and you prefer not to edit the database yourself. CDN settings stay with your account.
